By joining the Institute of Physics as a student member or an associate member undertaking full-time study, you will receive automatic membership of Nexus. Provided you continue to be a member of the IOP, your Nexus membership is valid for the entire duration of your degree, undergraduate or postgraduate, and up to one year after you complete your studies.
Student Membership
If you are an undergraduate student on a physics-related course you are entitled to apply for student membership. From September 2008 onwards, if the degree you are studying for is accredited or recognised by the IOP you will be able to apply for a free electronic online membership for the duration of your degree. This includes all the normal benefits of IOP and Nexus membership, except that you will only have access to the online versions of the magazines - Physics World and Interactions; you won't receive any printed copies. You can view our current list of accredited degree courses here A list of recognised degree courses will be made available soon; this is a new scheme so many courses are still in the process of being recognised.
If you started your undergraduate degree before September 2008 or are not on an accredited or recognised course you can become a regular student member of the IOP at a discounted price. This membership includes all the benefits of IOP and Nexus membership including printed copies of Physics World and Interactions sent to you. The fee for the duration of your course is £28, with discounts available for groups of 10 or more students applying at the same time. Note that if you have free membership, you can upgrade to annual paid membership at any time, if you wish to receive printed versions of the magazines. This is £14 per year, with a discount of £5 if payment is by direct debit. The discounts mentioned above are not available for students starting from September 2008 onwards.
Students who purchased a membership package for the length of their entire course before September 2008 will of course remain members until graduation.
Contact the Membership Development Officer to apply for membership (mischa.stocklin AT iop.org).
Associate Membership
If you are undertaking postgraduate study in a physics-related area you are entitled to apply for Associate Membership at the discounted studying rate. Please consult our current annual membership rates There is a further annual discount of £5 available if you pay by direct debit. To join, download an application form for Associate Membership here. You will need to enclose a copy of your undergraduate degree certificate; please do not send originals. If you have recently graduated and have not received your certificate yet, we suggest you wait until you do so.
If you have previously been a student member of the IOP and are wishing to upgrade to the associate level or affiliate, please do not use the online form, as this may create a duplicate membership record, and you may end up paying more than you should. Note that your student membership will be valid until the autumn after you graduate anyway, so wait until you have received your degree certificate before sending us the paper application.
Please note that you are eligible for the reduced student membership rate and also Nexus membership for the entire duration of your postgraduate studies, including any period of Continuing Research Status (CRS), e.g. when you are writing your thesis at the end of a PhD. You may need to inform us if you are in the latter category, to avoid paying more than you should. - please check your annual payments to make sure your are on the correct membership grade. After graduating with a postgraduate degree you will be required to pay the appropriate normal Associate Membership fee. Note that you may remain a member of Nexus for up to one year after graduation.
