If you navigated here via the Institute of Physics web site then you will know what the Institute is and what the Branches are. If you came here by another route then a few words of introduction are in order.
The Institute of Physics (IOP) is the national body of the UK which promotes Physics. You can think of it also as the professional association of physicists in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. It headquarters are in London where the paid staff work. Across the country there are a number of Branches which organise physics activities and represent the Institute. Each Branch has a constitution and a committee, elected by members of the Institute that are members of that branch, usually through living in the appropriate postcode area.
The Lancashire and Cumbria branch area is fairly self-explanatory. We cover the postcode areas PR (Preston), FY (Fylde coast), BB (Blackburn and East Lancashire), LA (Lancaster, North Lancashire and South Cumbria) and CA (Carlisle and North Cumbria).
We collaborate with our neighbouring north west branches (Merseyside and Manchester & district) in organising the NW region of the IOP competition for schools: Paperclip Physics. We also have our own schools competition, Eureka!, formerly organised by STEEL.
Whether you are a physicist or just (a bit!) interested in physics, then do join us at one of our events. They are not restricted to members - on the contrary, we warmly welcome everyone!
If you live in Lancashire and Cumbria, we are your local friendly physicists!
The Lancashire and Cumbria Branch recently won a SETNET Award, see here for full article.
